Treating Toddler Eczema

There are many factors and causes of eczema in babies including; genetics, external factors such as the immune system and external factors such as fabrics, chemicals and the environment. This is a common skin condition in infants and children affecting 10 - 20% of the population. It usually disappears on it's own as the child gets older or can remain dormant until it is triggered again by an irritant. Developing eczema as an adult is less common but can happen if the body is exposed to something that triggers the condition.

Eczema is a very broad term and covers many different types, the most common eczema in babies being atopic eczema. This is a skin allergy that can be caused by an immune system imbalance. It is characterized by patches of red, itchy and very sensitive skin. It is made worse from scratching and can lead to bleeding, weeping and infection.

Because it is more common in babies and children who are susceptible to other immune disorders such as hay fever and asthma, a strong healthy immune system is vital in treating eczema. The best way to tackle eczema in babies is by building their bodies protective defenses. Breastfeeding is a great place to start, it is a natural way to help improve a babies immune system by passing on helpful protective bacteria to them. Studies have shown that mother's who breastfeed their children longer greatly reduce the risk of toddler eczema occurring.

Another way to introduce healthy bacteria to a child is with probiotic supplements. Anything containing lactobacillus rhamnosus bacteria such as yogurt can be used by pregnant mother's and their children, and is shown to reduce the risk of eczema by around 50%. Other probiotic food sources include onions, bananas and miso.

Like anything the key to fighting the battle with eczema in babies is to know what the triggers are and eliminate them. While certain foods can help prevent and reduce the symptoms of eczema they are only a small part of effective treatment plan.
